Dear friends at Lightning Bolt, My name is Ari Ernesto from Bandung,Indonesia. I've been a follower of Lightning Bolt since i heard "Wonderful Rainbow", though i may be a new fan, but i dont think i will give up the commitment. I've been intrigued by LB's music, and it moved me so much that i decided to construct my own gear. Therefore, i'd like to know what sort of gears that Brian uses for his bass sound and modulation. And for other Brian is the drumset? I'm truly amazed with LB's expertise on DIY gear assembling. I think you guys have put out a concrete example of how you can formulate such distinctive sound without depending on expensive top notch equipments. Gears are expensive here and bands don't have their own. We have to rent, and it costs extremely expensive. I hope people can draw inspiration from Lightning Bolt. Thank you so much for painting my world, Lightning Bolt. I will look forward to your reply. I'm also wondering if i could write to you ? like e-mails or regular mails? Thank you beforehand. All the best.
ARI ERNESTO

I can list all of their gear cause I'm a gear-nut and a nerd.
I think back in the day they basically used whatever they could get their hands on(used junk borrowing stuff) I'm guessing.
Now Brian G. Has a MM Stingray, 2 boss distortion units, a boss octive, a line 6 delay, and a bass whammy, and also sometimes a bass wah.
Brian C. uses what appear to be random drums you find at music stores or from people who didn't want them anymore, he uses a lot of different cymbals, and he has an old snare from the 70's. He's also got some filter trigger thing on his kick that makes noise.
And for amps Brian G. Uses an ampegsvt4 and random other bass amps/power amps, Brian C. got a new mixer recently and puts his vocals and kick drum through a bunch of speakers.
Cabs, Brian G. seems to use used or random 1x18's(2) and also 4x10's(2), Brian C. has a 1x18, a 4x12 and two pa speakers that I think came with the mixer.
I'm done being a geek.

Gimme a song where the octave pedal is used I can't pin point what song it adds or takes away so I need an example that's dead obvious...

i can add a bit.. brian c. uses a DW5000 kick pedal, and a Zildjian 20" Ping Ride cymbal(at least he did when i saw them this summer). he uses that home-made telephone reciever microphone that's sewn into his mask, running that through a boss super distortion, a wah of some sort, and a line 6 delay modeler. serious shit.

wow! thank you so much for the reply fellas! i really appreciate it. it's truly remarkable to hear such eclectic sonic from that stompboxes that Brian G uses. but i have also other things that i want to enquire: -why does Brian G sets up his pedals on a particular configuration? what i mean is, why doesn't he arrange those pedals in a line? (im sorry if it doesnt make any sense, my English is inadequate), when i see the picture of his pedals position, the super overdrive is facing Octave pedal, and Bass over drive is on its own, is there any rationale to this arrangement? -and how did Brian C technically converted a home-made telephone receiver into a mic? im wondering if can do this too.
ok, thank you so much, my friends. and special thanx to brianbailey who's being so informative.
sincerely, Ari Ernesto from Indonesia

He keeps them like that because in songs hes constantly switching distortions, he keeps them like that so he can switch the pedals in one foot motion, he can all three at the same time I think too. And no prob for being such a fucking nerd for knowing all this junk.
